Lionel here bringing something a little newer than my fellow colleagues here at The Infection for my game of the week. Everyone knows about Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, it received many awards including game of the year by many and if you have awards it usually means the game is good as is, right? WRONG! Hideo Kojima can make the best even better. Like Cronus’ game of the week Kingdom Hearts II; Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty and Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater are also victims to the re-release with extras, but unlike Kingdom Hearts II these games are available at a game retailer near you. To those of you who do not know the Metal Gear franchise let me give you a quick tour. There is an epic soldier known as Solid Snake who has a reputation for taking down oversized bipedal nuclear tanks. Solid Snake was cloned from an even more uber super soldier, Big Boss (jizz in your pants at the awesomeness of that name), who he has killed numerous times, and is a reoccurring plot hole in the franchise. There is also a lot of Cold War politics involved. This is where Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater comes in. So you are Big Boss, just not formally in Big Boss fashion yet. You are in late 1960’s Russia with beautiful scenery and awesome gameplay and you get to destroy a rebel Russian Extremist group hell bent on destroying the U.S. who just happens to have a nuclear missile launching tank at their disposal. By the end of the game you find out who the man is behind the name Big Boss.
Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence is a re-release of Snake Eater with some new features added in.
- New Flexible Camera
Instead of the old overhead camera angle, Hideo Kojima went for something new, over the shoulder. Purists faint, FPS gamers jump for joy. A change that I personally like and makes the game feel more intuitive.
- Metal Gear Online
Have you had enough of the A.I.? Have you beaten the game on extreme? Do you think you are Big Boss? Well take your skills online with the rest of the pack who answered yes to these questions like you and see if you are truly worthy of the title. I mean the name says it all Metal Gear, online. Need I say more?
- Snake vs Monkey
That sounds wrong. But it’s a fun mini game to play if you feel like killing monkeys.
- Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake
That’s right folks you get to play the two ORIGINAL Metal Gear games you get to see how Solid Snake starts to build his own legend, by killing Big Boss, twice.
So this is my pick of the week, enjoy this and relish the fact that YOU get the chance to play as THE BIG BOSS. Enjoy that epic final battle between Big Boss and his mentor. “Good! Now we can fight as warriors! Hand to hand! It is the basis of all combat! Only a fool trusts his life to a weapon!” Bonus points to the person who can comment where that is from and who said it.
