The Streets are Alive with the Sound of… Blowjobs?

Street-side prostitution and brothels are now legal in Canada.

You heard me right.

Thanks to a controversial ruling this past Tuesday, September 28th of 2010, an Ontario court has ruled that current Canadian criminal code provisions pertaining to prostitution and the like actually contribute to the dangers faced by sex-trade workers and have thus been annulled as being unconstitutional.

The current situation can be summed up as such: before where a sex-trade worker would have to weigh their personal safety against their abidance to the law, they can now pick up the phone to report a ‘bad client’ to the police. Originally the Criminal Code of Canada would make the act of notifying an officer of a potentially dangerous individual, secondary to reporting that they themselves were in the middle of illegal acts and thus be charged themselves.

The courts considered the above situation (and probably countless others) and came to the conclusion that provisions in the criminal code related to prostitution violate the rights guaranteed to individuals as stated within the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, and thus areĀ unenforceable.

Now don’t misunderstand, the courts and the Canadian government certainly aren’t approving of the sex-trade even going as far as to say that it’s up to the government to make laws, where courts simply make allowances and overturn them. However, they are openly acknowledging their existence as a part of Canadian society and that sex-trade worker have been treated somewhat unjustly, however ‘undesirable’ the industry may be.

Parliament will have to make new laws concerning the restriction and abolishment of prostitution and similar elements of the sex-trade, but in the mean time, go nuts.

The Infection does not necessarily condone spending your entire life savings on now-legal whores. We DO however encourage you to share your thoughts with us.
